Abstract
The authors experienced remarkable improvement of myasthenia gravis after thymectomy in a patient with thymic hyperplasia.
This 32-year-.old female had been suffered from muscle weakness over 4 year and treated with pyridostigmine and prednisone without significant effect for last 5 months. The diagnosis of myasthenia gravis was made by clinical findings and EMG finding at Kang Nam St. Mary¢¥s Hospital. The thymectomy was performed through sternal splitting without complication. The thymic tissue confirmed thymic hyperplasia. Following the thymectomy, the muscle weakness showed remarkable improvement and now she is able to do daily activity with pyridostigmine 180mg a day in last 1 1/2year.
This observation suggests that thymectomy is safe and effective treatment for myasthenia gravis compared to the conventional therapy of anticholinesterase and prednisone.
The literature indicates that thymectomy is the most effective for myasthenia gravis except ocular and congenital forms, and recommends early surgery especially in case of young woman for complete remission.
